The 1.2 mile Yost Ridge Trail opened today at the Jefferson Memorial Forest. This trail connects the Welcome Center to the Horine Section of the Forest (and eventually the Paul Yost section, as well). The trail begins right at the front door of the Welcome Center and winds around behind it before plunging [...]
Thomas and I spent a gorgeous spring Sunday paddling up the Ohio River from the Charlestown State Park boat ramp to Fourteenmile Creek, Rose Island and the mysterious Devil’s Backbone. Legend has it that the Welsh Prince Madoc built a stone fort overlooking the Ohio River at this location. Here’s an old map [...]
I had a doctor’s appointment at one of the many medical offices along Breckinridge Lane and decided to swing by Brown Park. This 28-acre park is hemmed in by the Watterson Expressway, Baptist East Medical complex and the Waterford and Mallard Crossing apartment complexes. I worked at Waterford Apartments for a short while [...]
Thomas and I visited Charlestown State Park in Indiana this past weekend. This 5100 acre park is only 30 minutes from Louisville. There are six hiking trails, a boat launch, picnic areas, playgrounds, and campsites. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is rather lacking on info about the park: http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2986.htm
On a sunny, [...]
A couple of weeks ago, before we hit the deep-freeze, I hiked the Orange Trail at Jefferson Memorial Forest. It is a short, hiker-only 1.7 mile loop in the Horine Section. Access to the Horine Section is by permit only, but permits are free and available at the JMF Welcome Center, 8:30 to [...]
At 6.2 miles, the Siltstone Trail is the longest and most strenuous trail at Jefferson Memorial Forest. It’s major drawback is being a one-way trail, so you either have to leave a vehicle at trail’s end or hike back another 6.2 miles. The trail is open to hikers only.
Beginning at the [...]
Red Orchard Park is part of Shelby County Parks and Recreation. I had little idea what to expect when I drove out there on a sunny, but cool Monday a couple of weeks ago. The Shelby County website mentions the park was donated by Clarence Miller in 2007 and has 131 acres of [...]
I often get asked for my favorite trail at Jefferson Memorial Forest and the Mitchell Hill/Blue Trail is my usual answer. At 1.5 miles, it’s a family-friendly hike despite its two hills. Easily hiked in 45 minutes, I recommend packing a lunch and taking your time since one of the highlights in a [...]
While the forecast called for overcast skies Monday morning, I had a good feeling about the day and went for a hike at Morgan Conservation Park in Oldham County. Partly sunny skies graced the low hills of this 227-acre sliver of rural Oldham County saved from private development. An expansive entrance road worthy [...]
Ventured a little farther afield than usual this past Monday and visited Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve which is about an hour and a half from Louisville. The lure was its two-mile loop trail and views of the Kentucky River palisades.
To get there, take Route 27 South out of Lexington. I [...]
